A Note From the Editors

by Timothy T. Jones and Jesse Alan Gordon

Welcome to the premier issue of The Steward, the journal of the Buffalo River Stewardship Foundation.

The Stewardship Foundation is dedicated to protecting the Buffalo River while respecting the property rights of land owners. We offer "conservation easements" to land owners along the Buffalo's tributaries, where we pay them to maintain a "riparian corridor." We facilitate a "Watershed Council" to promote cooperation between relevant agencies and persons. We produce educational material and films on issues related to the Buffalo River. We are a private non-profit organization, and 100% of our membership dues go to our conservation easement program.

Our journal, The Steward, is dedicated to keeping our membership informed about our activities and about other relevant activities in the Buffalo River watershed. We offer a forum for voices on all sides of the issues. Our feature topic for this issue is Sustainable Development, with a number of articles on "market environmentalism" versus "command and control." In addition, we have a selection of articles introducing the Stewardship Foundation, explaining conservation easements, and providing background on the problems of the watershed.

We are a start-up organization and are looking for volunteers to help with conservation easement work as well as our other organizational tasks. We are looking for editorial staff, and we welcome submissions of articles and letters, as well as "leads" for likely participants in our easement program (our legal contract appears on pp. 20-21). We also hope that you will join the Stewardship Foundation. We are supported primarily by membership dues, and the success of our conservation efforts depends on you.
