The Buffalo River Stewardship Foundation

The Buffalo River Stewardship Foundation is dedicated to maintaining the water quality of the Buffalo National River while respecting the property rights of landowners and farmers. The Buffalo River, in northern Arkansas, is America's first National River, established in 1972 on the centennial of the establishment of Yellowstone as America's first National Park.

Programs of the Buffalo River Stewardship Foundation:

Conservation Easements

We lease and purchase conservation easements along the tributaries to the Buffalo River. These easements establish a forested riparian corridor 100 feet wide, which improves water quality and aesthetic appeal.

Watershed Council

We facilitate a Watershed Council at which all government agencies and private interests in the Buffalo River region can discuss mutually acceptable solutions to pollution problems.

Economic Studies

We produce reports on the economics of the Buffalo River region, focusing on the costs and benefits of the tourism and recreation industries and how they are affected by water pollution.
